Breast Implant Incisions

There are many factors that need to be considered when choosing to follow through with having a breast implant operation. Research and talking with a qualified plastic surgeon before scheduling a date for surgery is one way to choose the right options.

One decision that the surgeon and patient will need to discuss is the incision area for the placement of breast implants. While many people do not like the thought of having scars, an incision will create one no matter where it is located at.

Inframammary Incision

The inframammary incision is just one of the many incisions used by cosmetic surgeons today. This incision leaves little to no scar and is why it is preferred by more patients and cosmetic surgeons. The incision is made within the natural fold of the breast crease. It is located underneath the breast itself so that the scar will be out of plain view. The inframammary incision does have limitation on breast implant size. Larger implants will cause the scar to rise above the natural skin fold and to become visible. Smaller breast sizes will also create this problem.

Anchor Incision For Breast Implants

The anchor incision is a versatile and widely used incision that plastic surgeons take advantage of during a breast augmentation procedure. This incision is popular with plastic surgeons and patients because of the ability to reduce breast sag over time. It can also be used to help create a more natural appearance in their breasts. The incision is made around the areola and another one is made down from the areola to the toward the chest wall. The surgeon will then make another incision mark just underneath the breast. These cuts give this incision the markings of an anchor. This is the perfect option for patients that wish to have a dramatic increase in their breast size. It also helps patients who have had sagging occur to their natural breast because of age or pregnancy. The one major downside to this type of incision is the scar. As with all scars this one fades but, it will not ever completely disappear.

Vertical Incision

A widely used type of incision for breast reduction purposes is called the vertical incision. This incision can also be used to help patients that have breast sagging or drooping that are commonly brought on different circumstances in life but, mainly from unavoidable aging of the breasts and skin. The cosmetic surgeon will create an incision around the areola with another incision that runs vertically downward from the first. This second incision will be taken to the natural crease of the breast. Typically there will only be a small line that runs from the nipple to the natural crease of the breast. It is much less noticeable than a scar than what is created from an anchor incision being used. However is the surgeon does other procedures such as inverted nipples or reducing the the size of the areola then you may have additional scarring.
